RodeoHouston begins in style with first night of BBQ cookoff

Rodeo season is finally here, and fans of delicious smoked meats turned out at NRG Park on Thursday night to kick off the festivities with the annual World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest.

More than 250 barbecue teams served up their specialties in tents on the first day of the cookoff, each bringing their own flavor to the grill.

One team brought its completely renovated 1996 original food truck to cook all the meat. The company, Cotton, made a self-serve bar out of the hood, gutted the front seats and in their place added a rotisserie grill, decked out the sides of the truck with more grills, a chopping and washing station, televisions, and an oven.

“Sometimes we have a disaster somewhere and you want to feed a lot of people,” Scott Whitehead of Cotton said. “You can feed a lot of people with this machine, so it’s also gives us that purpose.”

This three-day cookoff feeds the thousands of ticket holders who attend the event and helps to raise money for scholarships. The cookoff will continue until Saturday, when the winning team will be announced.
