As water flows through our ground water table, it dissolves minerals, like calcium and magnesium from the surrounding soil and rock. These minerals can cause some problems in your Houston home if there is too much dissolved in the water. The mineral ions can separate from the water and accumulate as scale, which builds up on the insides of pipes, water heaters, and coffee makers, etc. This scale reduces water flow through your pipes. Eventually, pipes can become completely clogged. It also reduces soap’s ability to lather and reacts with soap to form a sticky scum. Water softeners replace the dissolved calcium and magnesium ions in the water and replaces them with more desirable ions, usually sodium.
